Went out on the lake at 6:30 am this morning. Light rain, but very still. I counted thirty sandhill cranes in the back bay (the Bay of Eternity). Then I met a little water beast (muskrat, most likely) breakfasting on mussels in otter bay. I must have been pretty quiet because she swam right up to my boat and passed me less than three feet from where I sat. She had some carryout she was taking back to the nest. I watched her swim into the reeds, and then turned to head home.
It had long stopped raining and the water was so perfectly still it reflected the shore and the sky like a mirror. I felt like I was like sitting in the middle of the sky. I just sat there for the longest time, soaking in the feeling of space and emptiness. And then the wind picked up, and I paddled home, eating my apple and peanut butter.
That sounds heavenly.
I've decided that when I've lost enough weight to be able to FIT into a kayak, I'm going to buy one, because it's stupid living here on the Broads, and never going on them. Even a small second hand boat would cost me several thousand, then there's mooring fees etc, whereas a kajak/canoe would only cost me a couple of hundred and I can get into the water from the car parks, and the licence is £15 a year!

You should go for it! There is nothing like being on the water to really help you unwind.
Uh, what are the Broads?
