It's not every day I get to host an author who's also been a student of mine. Rachell is a soon-to-be graduate of Seton Hill University's Writing Popular Fiction program and she's here to share a day in the life of an erotic romance author. She's also giving away a copy of her new release, Spicy with a Side of Cranberry Sauce, so please read below for how to enter to win.
Welcome Rachell!
Hi there, Jessica. Thank you so much for having me stop by today to share a bit about myself and my books!
I’d like to give you all a glimpse into the daily life of an erotic romance author. I’ll try to make it nice and exciting (but also real) for you.
So let’s take a typical Wednesday, since it’s Hump Day, and the day I usually blog on the Divas page.
We could start the day at midnight, when I’m generally still up, locked in my basement with the little electric stove working on something writing related, but since that means I haven’t been to bed yet, it’s still technically Tuesday for me.
So we’ll start around 10:00 a.m. when I bolt out of bed and run around like a crazy woman to get ready for work. I shower, eat a quick breakfast (sometimes), check e-mails, Facebook, Twitter, throw my laptop in my ginormous purse, get my work stuff ready and run out the door by 11:08. I’ve timed it to a science. As long as I’m physically in my car at 11:08, I will be to my day job on time.
I rush in the door put my ridiculous amounts of stuff on the counter in one of the classrooms and… wait for it, because this is the BEST part of my day… I change diapers! Four, five, sometimes more! (Okay, so I was clearly being a little sarcastic there, but hey, that’s me.) Then I get the kids ready and serve lunch. Then everyone goes down for a nap. I spend the next ten to fifteen minutes repeating “Good night,” in a very stern voice until I’m so sick of the phrase I want to say something else, anything else to get the children to nap. “Go the fuck to sleep” is often the phrase that comes to mind, but it never comes out of my mouth. I do actually enjoy my day job after all.
Phew, the kids are asleep and now I can focus on my WIPs. I post a blog, titled WIP it Wednesday all about my current Work in Progress. They’re usually very interesting and most of the time include excerpts from whatever book I’m focusing on that week. I engage in a bit of frivolity online – more important emails, I sometimes read racy blogs by other erom authors, and then I close the internet and force myself not to reopen it. Then I switch classrooms and go next door where all of the children are already sleeping like little angels. I sit and write. Sometimes it’s revisions, sometimes it’s research for a new book, sometimes it’s new words or a guest blog (like this one!) I was doing said research a few weeks ago on BDSM clubs and some other completely sexually-oriented stuff when my boss came in! She didn’t even notice She knows I write naughty romances, and she doesn’t mind, so I’m sure I could explain the complete legitimacy of looking up BDSM clubs around the country.
After nap comes an array of more diapers, snack, playtime, and then home. Then comes some more boring stuff… driving home, avoiding deer, making dinner and eating. Though I must say, sometimes the dinner conversation in this household is EPIC. Laugh out loud hysterics often break out when my family members start shooting zingers back and forth. Most of them are dirty, too.
And then some relaxation – books, TV, a bubble bath, perhaps. And then I lock myself in my basement office and the real work begins. More research, heavy writing, editing. Some nights it’s from 10:00 p.m. when the house is all quiet and asleep until 3:00 a.m. I have recently become addicted to Pandora, and I put in my earbuds and write my ass off. Then I stumble up the stairs and fall into bed for a few hours until the alarm rings and it’s off to the races again.
That’s about it, folks, that’s a typical day in the life of moi. Now if it’s a Wednesday after a book release, or just before, things are a little bit crazier. There’s a lot more blogging, social media, and promo going on and a lot less writing of new words. This past Wednesday for instance, I did lots of blogging and promo for my new release, Spicy with a Side of Cranberry Sauce and some revisions on my WIP.
On that note, here’s a little bit about my newest release:
Amy Easton's idea for the perfect Thanksgiving doesn't include giving up the last can of cranberry sauce to a stranger, no matter how sexy he is. She will make this holiday special for Dad even if it kills her. And that means getting everything on the shopping list.
Mason Rider is home to help his mom through her first postdivorce holiday, but when he finds the seductive blonde who body-checked his grocery cart standing in Mom's kitchen, he doesn't know what to do. Sharing Thanksgiving with this woman and her father wasn't part of his damned plan.
Who would've thought that a simple can of cranberry sauce could lead to holiday disaster? Or to happily ever after?
